buy-gone-days Store Antique Victorian Medical VAPO CRESOLENE VAPORIZER LAMP Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 This is a Vapo Cresolene/Kerosene Vaporizer Lamp Made in USA Patented Aug. 4. 85. - Aug. 8. 88 It is an Antique Medical/Pharmacy Device. [I do not know if it would meet today’s standers, so it is not being sold for Medical Use] It was made in New York City at 62 Cortlandt St. by Vapo-Cresolene Co. around the turn of the century. The metal part of the lamp is iron and painted gold, it stands about 6 ¼ inch tall An old ad said it was: for Whooping Cough, Spasmodic Croup, Asthma, Sore Throat, Coughs, Bronchitis, Colds, Catarrh “Used while you sleep” Cresolene was a dark liquid made from coal tar with a pungent smell. It was poured into the dish and when the lamp was lit, a vapor was released. The vapor was supposed to kill germs.
