Description
Up for auction is this beautiful vintage, turn-of-the-century doctor's bag/valise. I have owned it for about 10 years, and it's in wonderful, absolutely clean condition. The color and wear looks spectacular and it's solid as the day it was made. I once knew how to decode the exact age of the bag from its markings, but have forgotten and don't want to mislead anyone. I've added a close-up of the stamp on the bag's bottom in case that'd help. It reads "18 1683". My poor memory recalls that means it was made in 1883, but please don't take that as fact. It certainly was made around the turn of the century. The bag is roomy and holds a handsome, distinguished shape -- and measures approximately 17 1/2" long x 10 1/2" wide x 11 1/2" tall. The brass hardware looks and works great (no key for the lock, though), and the handle's been as durable as can be. The bag's interior leather lining is absurdly clean with no tears I can see besides this: The interior has compartments on either side of the bag -- one that snaps shut, and one that's sewn to create two pockets on its side. That sewn point has detached itself over the years, resulting in a 3/4" slit in the leather there. This could be repaired in 5 minutes, and it would be just like new. The slit has never increased in size since I've had it, and I've used the interior quite a bit for storing notebooks and journals. Overall, the lining is in shockingly great shape for its age. I'd always planned to have the bag professionally cleaned and restored, but never quite got to it. A good cleaning may make it look even more incredible, but it'd be pretty hard to top what she looks like now! The true star of the bag, though, is the exterior leather. Strong, but not rigid -- perfectly distressed but with stitching as tight as the day it was sewn. It's just incredible. The photo brings out way too much light-brown and yellow; in person you'd see a truer rich dark-brown hide with light auburn patina shining out of the natural wear. The bag has always lived and been loved in a non-smoking home. Please take a look at my spotless feedback rating and bid with confidence! *Most buyers can use the eBay 10% coupon on this item.
