It is an acrylic on canvass and depicts the Buddha in the bhumisparsa mudra, otherwise known as the earth witnessing posture. It was in this posture that the Buddha touched the ground with his right hand to call the earth goddess, Sthavara, to bear witness to his awakening or enlightenment, which took place under the Bodhi tree in Bodhgaya, India some 2600 years ago. The Buddha sits on a pedestal of lotus flowers. Below, lotus flowers rise out of the muddy waters of the pond unstained, symbolizing purity. Around the Buddha emanates a flame-like light, referred to in the ancient language, Pali, as prabhamandala. This light represents the aura or spiritual intensity of the Buddha at this time. Above, the Buddha is shaded by the Bodhi tree, here impressively detailed in gold. Flowers fall from the sky in celebration of this earth changing event and both the moon and the sun shine above.  The painting is in good condition considering its age. Small, subtle patches of mould, the product of decades of rainy seasons are visible, but in no way diminish the aesthetics of the painting. Unfortunately, it appears that the painting has been folded at some time in the past and two creases are visible – one through the middle of the painting and another toward the top. There are also two very minor tears in the painting as illustrated in the last two photos of the series. This painting possesses a mystical quality, and is a beautiful depiction of the Buddha’s awakening. Devotional works of art such as this seem to deeply inspire Thai artists. Carved wooden rods have been sewn into the ends of the canvass, which could be removed if desired so that the painting could be framed.
