Description
Thank you very much for considering this beautiful work of art.  We are now retired and must part with a collection of over 100 ivory carvings we have loved and taken care of for nearly 40 years.  We are very proud to offer only the very FINEST in QUALITY ivory carvings. This carving is 100% genuine AFRICAN ELEPHANT IVORY and in EXCELLENT CONDITION.  It was HAND CARVED and HAND SCRIMSHAWED in China by a gifted master craftsman in the early 1900s.  It has a lovely patina that nature has chosen to bestow upon it. This carving is UNIQUE and exhibits beautiful IVORY GRAIN which is guaranteed to be clearly visible.  The ivory has been highly polished and exquisitely detailed.  The quality of the ivory, the quality of the carving and the quality of the scrimshaw work are all exceptional. This carving was legally imported into the USA. This carving can only be shipped to locations within the USA. Effective January 1, 2009 Ebay will not permit ivory to be bought or sold on Ebay! In January of 2006 Columbus (the experts in Asian art) provided an auction estimate on this piece of $14,000.  Auction estimates are conservative and typically well below appraised values.   Ivory Sword It is difficult to find the right words to describe this magnificent work of art and it is a rare treat to be able to offer it for sale. This sword is carved from the most beautiful ivory and displays marvelous ivory graining everywhere.  It has been polished to a glass-like finish.  The design is a cross between a Japanese Samuari sword and a traditional Chinese weapon. There is also a deeply carved square on the back side with four character rein marks.  The mark is written in Mirror Writing!  This is incredibly rare and adds immensely to the desirability of this piece.  The mark is Quianlong nian zhi. The scabbard is one solid piece of ivory.  It is 43” long (that’s right – almost 4 feet).  It is deeply carved in the center with a carved cartouche of a phoenix and dragon chasing the flaming pearl of knowledge.  The phoenix and dragon both have inlaid eyes.  The dragon represents male vigor and fertility and is also the imperial emblem of the Emperor.  The dragon ranks first among the four supernatural creatures. There are semi precious stones mounted all along the top.  The handle has a very intricately dragon head with an ogre mask near the hilt (also both with inlaid eyes).    The tsuba is ivory of course with the signature of the artist with nice rein mark.    As you can see the blade is short.  This to accommodate the natural hollow part of the tusk scabbard (again being a solid tusk).    It comes with a beautiful custom carved wood stand.  This is a truly monumental piece that measures 43” by 4 ½” by 4” and weighs well over 4 pounds! If you want to draw attention to your collection – better make a big spot on your shelf! This magnificent carving will make a stunning addition to any a home or office and should only increase in value over time.  Dimensions: 43.00" x 4.50" x 4.00" Weight:  4 Pounds, 3 ounces Signature: Quianlong nian zhi   We will ship to you via UPS Next Day Air Saver.
