Description
Thank you very much for considering this beautiful work of art.  We are now retired and must part with a collection of over 100 ivory carvings we have loved and taken care of for nearly 40 years.  We are very proud to offer only the very FINEST in QUALITY ivory carvings. This carving is 100% genuine AFRICAN ELEPHANT IVORY and in EXCELLENT CONDITION.  It was HAND CARVED and HAND SCRIMSHAWED and SIGNED in Japan by a gifted master craftsman in the late 1800s.  It has a lovely patina that nature has chosen to bestow upon it. This okimono is UNIQUE and exhibits beautiful IVORY GRAIN which is guaranteed to be clearly visible.  The ivory has been highly polished and exquisitely detailed.  The quality of the ivory, the quality of the carving and the quality of the scrimshaw work are all exceptional. This carving was legally imported into the USA. This carving can only be shipped to locations within the USA. Effective January 1, 2009 Ebay will not permit ivory to be bought or sold on Ebay! GAMA-SENNIN with STAFF This stunning Japanese ivory okimono showcases a Gama-Sennin with a toad at his feet.  He carrys a parcel of scrolls and a knarled staff. It was carved during the Meiji Period (1868 - 1912). The Gama-Sennin, also known as Kosensei, is a wise old man. He wanders the land with his toad companion, who teaches him the secret powers of herbs, including the secret of immortality. The toad is a trickster and a magician, a master of escapes and spells.  He is also the keeper of the real, powerful secrets of the world, such as the secret of immortality. The toad knows the secret of eternal life and for his friendship reveals the secret to the wise man. The details on this piece are just fabulous.  His facial features are perfect and embody the wisdom that such a work of art should portray.  His hands are well detailed down to the fingernails and one hand rests lightly on his knarled staff.  His robes flow gently and are carved in great detail.  The staff in itself is a work of art and is truly realistic.  The little toad that rests at his feet is also beautifully carved and scrimshawed. Even the parcel of scrolls that he carrys on his back, the inro at his side and the plant that touches his staff are incredibly well done.  The rarity of this marvelous carving adds to its overall mystique and desirability.  The amazing detail indicates this is the work of a true master carver.  This is a piece of Japanese art that you will very seldom see offered for sale and the quality is at the pinnacle of Japanese ivory okimono carvings.  It is signed by the noted artist Hoko on the underside of the base. This incredible piece will enhance your collection of fine Japanese ivory okimonos for many years to come and should steadily increase in value over the years.
