This carving is 100% genuine AFRICAN ELEPHANT IVORY and in EXCELLENT CONDITION.  It was HAND CARVED and HAND SCRIMSHAWED and SIGNED in China by a gifted master craftsman in the early 1700s.  It has a lovely patina that nature has chosen to bestow upon it. This carving is UNIQUE and exhibits beautiful IVORY GRAIN which is guaranteed to be clearly visible.  The ivory has been highly polished and exquisitely detailed.  The quality of the ivory, the quality of the carving and the quality of the scrimshaw work are all exceptional. This carving was legally imported into the USA. This carving can only be shipped to locations within the USA.  Effective January 1, 2009 Ebay will not permit ivory to be bought or sold on Ebay!   SAGE holding a FAN circa 1730 This ancient solid ivory carving portrays a sage holding a beautifully decorated fan.  This carving is absolutely stunning in its detail. On November 25, 1981 (over 25 years ago) Sotheby’s appraised this piece for $10,000 and dated it circa 1730.  The Dynasty Mark on the bottom dated it to the reign of Yung-Cheng (1723-1735).  A Reign Mark indicates that this was carved for the Imperial Palace.  The artist is Ti Ting. This sage possesses marvelous facial features which are both kindly and solemn.  He is carved in great detail.  A scroll on a tassel hangs down in front of him indicative of his learning and wisdom. Please take special note of the wonderful flow the artist has given to the garments that he wears and the subtle use of scrimshaw used to enhance this gorgeous piece. The four large character marks on the fan read Qin he xiang lai and serves to extol the beauty of this piece.  The undercut carving of the fan makes this a piece to treasure forever. He weighs nearly 5 pounds and stands 16 inches tall – a monumental piece by any measure. This is an exceptional piece of art from the top to bottom.  It would be a crowning jewel to add to your collection of fine ancient ivory carvings and should only increase in value over the years.
