Description
Thank you very much for considering this beautiful work of art.  We are now retired and must part with a collection of over 100 ivory carvings we have loved and taken care of for nearly 40 years.  We are very proud to offer only the very FINEST in QUALITY ivory carvings. This carving is 100% genuine AFRICAN ELEPHANT IVORY and in EXCELLENT CONDITION.  It was HAND CARVED and HAND SCRIMSHAWED in China by a gifted master craftsman in the early 1900s.  It has a lovely patina that nature has chosen to bestow upon it. This carving is UNIQUE and exhibits beautiful IVORY GRAIN which is guaranteed to be clearly visible.  The ivory has been highly polished and exquisitely detailed.  The quality of the ivory, the quality of the carving and the quality of the scrimshaw work are all exceptional. This carving was legally imported into the USA. This carving can only be shipped to locations within the USA. Effective January 1, 2009 Ebay will not permit ivory to be bought or sold on Ebay! In January of 2006 Columbus (the experts in Asian art) provided an auction estimate on this piece of $5,000.  Auction estimates are conservative and typically well below appraised values.   The Chinese God of War - Guan Ti This is an important Chinese Ivory Group depicting Guan Ti – the ancient Chinese God of War – dressed in full armor being driven by his attendant in a horse drawn chariot.    The full body armor is deeply incised and is highlighted by a foo dog carved in the middle of the breast plate.   The Foo Dog is the symbol of good fortune, luck and wisdom and is placed at the entrance of a home, temple, palace or other building to guard the occupants from evil and harmful spirits. The Foo Dog is the emblem of valor and energy – the indispensable compliments of wisdom.   The cart itself is very ornate.  There is elaborate scroll work on either side of Guan Ti and the wheels of the cart are also elaborately decorated.  There are numerous dragons that also decorate the cart.  The dragon represents male vigor and fertility and is also the imperial emblem of the Emperor.  The dragon ranks first among the four supernatural creatures. The size and weight of this piece are incredible.  The length of the group is 20 ½”, the horse is 8 ½” x 9”, the main figure is 9”, the attendant is 6” and the height of the main figure on the chariot is 14”.  The piece, without the stand, weighs a very significant 7 pounds!  All of the pieces are genuine elephant ivory.    The condition is really spectacular.  There are but a few very minor age lines on the chariot.  This is a wonderful, superbly finished and sculptured dynamic image of prime importance.  This is truly a prize to be cherished for a lifetime. A custom carved hardwood stand is included and appears to be original to the piece. This wonderful carving will make a stunning addition to any a home or office and should only increase in value over the years.  Dimensions: 22" x 15" x 5" Weight:  7 Pounds We will ship to you via USPS Priority Insured Mail.
