Description
The best way for me to describe this fantastic item is to share the description of the item as given to me when I bought it on eBay some time ago (see text below): Visit My eBay Store: El Rancho Antiques and Cutlery "JAPAN, PRE EDO ERA MIN. URUSHI COVERED KOI BOWL W/PINE BRANCHES - A SON IS BORN - AN HEIR - A WARRIOR. A VERY RARE AND UNUSUAL FIND, IF THE 'STORY' IS UNDERSTOOD. FOLKS THAT KNOW, WILL KNOW. ANYBODY CAN RESEARCH NOWADAYS THOUGH!! STUDY IT PLEASE. THERE IS ONLY ONE OF THESE AND WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER. THE VALUE CAN ONLY GO ONE WAY. UP. I am going to try to part with this, but I want folk to know it is about the rarest work of Art, REALLY scarce and after 30 years never saw one this good. I do NOT want to sell it, but after my 6 month in Hospital, I have no choice. I will NOT give it away and the Reserve is going to be LARGE, I will run it for 10 days and then I don't think anybody will see it on eBay again. THIS IS NOT A 'DELICATE', TYPICAL LATTER EDO ERA 'GIRLY BOY' PIECE (AS ARNOLD SAYS). EXPERTS HERE SAY IT IS FROM THE WARRING STATES PERIOD OR A WARRIOR FAMILY CLAN AS OPPOSED TO OVER REFINED, TOO ELEGANTLY THIN, NOT VERY DURABLE WORKS LATER ON. THE DESIGN AND THICKNESS PLUS THE ABSOLUTE MASTERY OF THE ARTIST THAT DID THE KOI AND THE IMPORTANCE ATTACHED TO THE NEW BORN SON OF A WARRIOR, OR EVEN A WARLORD, TELLS THE AGE MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE. THE ADDITION OF THE 100 YEAR PINE TREE LIFETIME WISHES ARE ENOUGH FOR A WARRIOR, BUT IF YOU NOTICE, ROYALTY AND LATER ASSOCIATED TYPES USED THE CRANE AND TURTLE AS IF THEY COULD LIVE 10,000 YEARS AS IN THE CASE OF THE TURTLE OR A 1,000 YEARS FOR A CRANE. AND WERE VERY DELICATE, SINCE THE COUNTRY WAS AT PEACE AT HOME AT LAST. So, Warriors were not so useful, often unemployed and forced to live as Ronin and Works of Art that survived like this faded away. Can you imagine these Warriors, Smelling Incense, worrying about Tea Ceremonies, Flower Arranging or writing poetry, etc.? As opposed to The Life portrayed in films of Kurosawa and American adaptions of Yojimbo, etc.? Just look at the box I found it in. (Although the bowl was well cared for in spite of all.) I did NOT touch it to try to clean it more and make it 'Sparkly' as I do not know how. But I tried to keep the Styrofoam floatssoms, etc. due to 'static cling' off is all. It is in as near mint Condition as I know how to describe for Urushi and especially that age. If you look at the WWW a small bit is below: There is no telling as far as we know how old it could be. Muromachi Era was Constant Warfare and makes sense. Urushi lasted thousands of years and I have heard, even submerged on shipwrecks! Please study as much as you can. I will not sell it to someone who does not appreciate it. I have spent months studyinging it. Not counting the 30 years it took to find it, plus the CASH I paid too. It IS a good investment though. It is impossible to EVER get another one like this. My job is to PRESERVE and spread these Treasures around where they will survive for hundreds of more years. Please look up Nihon - Kogeikai for more or anywhere on the WWW for more on URUSHI. 'The history of urushi may be traced back thousands of years, numerous artefacts having been excavated proving that urushi culture already existed in Japan by around 4000 BC. The introduction of Buddhism in the 6th century brought with it the urushi crafts of continental Asia, later to be assimilated and transformed into urushi techniques unique to Japan. ' A Shogun was interested in having SONS that could have more Sons and Warriors and fight until a maximum of 100 years and like the Koi swimming up a Waterfall, never give up and preserve their family. The BEST Symbol for a boy. THIS WAS ESSENTIAL AT THAT TIME. (It would help to look up the KOI / Carp / Boy Child story to understand this bowl.) After the Edo Era was established and the onset of the Meiji Era the Country was at Peace and only involved in Foreign Wars, elegant things could be made and admired for the Artistry alone. This is not that type of piece. BUT! If you study the Koi, you will see that the artist did the work for a LOT more than money or fame. He did it for a Warrior's Son is what we think. It is too 'STRONG' folks say. My thought is that the Artist felt he had best do an OUTSTANDING JOB on the koi or risk losing Body Parts in Sword Practice or something. So he did. I have never seen such a GREAT Koi. Look in his EYES! " This is one of my truly great finds and passing on to others. So, please stay tuned to see what I can uncover. It is getting harder and harder every day to find things. Check out my other items!
