Description
Large antique Japanese lacquered isho-dansu, or clothing chest, dating to the Meiji-Period (c.1890). This tansu hails from the Sado Island area of Japan, a region known for fine lacquered furniture and distinctive hardware. Typical of high quality tansu, this piece consists of two sections. Each half measures 44 1/2" wide by 17" deep. The bottom section stands 22 1/2", slightly taller than the top half (22 1/4"). The two pieces may be used separately or as a single stacked unit (44 1/2" tall stacked), locked together by iron handles on the sides. As with most Japanese furniture, this item is fully functional, with deep, wide drawers that operate smoothly. The case and drawers are constructed primarily of Sugi, a subspecies of Cypress commonly referred to as Japanese Cedar. The drawer cases in the top section are made from beautiful Kiri, or Paulownia, wood prized by Japanese furniture makers for it natural resistance to moisture and damage from the elements.
